Rebecca Newark - On the Way Up

NEWS:
Sept '24
After a busy year where Rebecca once again retained National Para Crit Title and was introduced to the challenge of Track Cycling by the remarkable Helen Scott, Rebecca is now being considered for the GB WCP, the highest level squad. It is with regret that I now wave goodbye to her. It was a great journey taking her from being a very talented cricketer to a very talented para-cyclist, but its time for her to move on with the GB National coaches. Hope to see her at the Para-Worlds soon.

Rebecca's Story: Rebecca comes to cycling after a few years of Yorkshire County Cricket. Cricket is not really an endurance sport, so switching across to cycling as an adult is a tough move because you miss the U16 and junior development years. So we started by working on her aerobic endurance and spent 18months focussing on improving her mitochondrial efficiency, and VO2 max, and raising her threshold. Once Rebecca became comfortable with the aggression of crit racing she moved quickly from Cat4, to Cat 3 and upwards to Cat2. Rebecca wears a prosthesis on her right leg and her primary focus is to make the BC Paracycling squad and in 2022 she won the C5 National Circuit Championship after a race-long battle with the previous holder. Rebecca then moved onto the BC Para-Development Squad for 2023 and benefitted from guidance from BC para-coach Emma Pitt. With a stack of AE work in the bank, we then started focussing on her TT performance, that is still work in progress but in Sept 2023 Rebecca retained her National Circuit Race Title and rode the fastest TT for a female at the Para-National TT Champs, taking Bronze after factoring (adjusting for C5-C2 level). The next challenge is Track and developing her (flying) 200m, 500TT and 3k IP. She has just been invited to the next level of the BC Para Squad under the guidance of Helen Scott - Hopefully there is more success on the way © John Wann, CyclingCoach
